you for attention!
Activities at the lesson
Activities at the start of the lesson deserve more attention than they
usually receive. In fact, the initial activities that start the class are very
important for the following reasons:
1: Warm Ups set the tone of the lesson. For example, an
activity that students find too difficult or confusing can prove discouraging.
Compare a fun activity which raises energy levels.
2: Warm Ups get students to begin thinking and
focusing on English. It may have been a few days, a week, or even longer
since they last used English. A little time here will improve receptivity
later.
3: Warm Ups provide a transition into the topic. An activity at
the start of the lesson activates pre-existing knowledge on a subject, and may
even get students to use (or consider) some of the ideas, vocabulary, or even
grammar important to the lesson.
4: Warm Ups allow the teacher important opportunities
to assess character and ability. After all, some students work well together, and
others don't. Some students have good days, and others bad. During the initial
activity, the teacher can determine who will form the best groups for
subsequent activities.
What follows are ten ideas for effective Warm Ups.
Idea #1: Write two or three questions on the board, preferably
related to the topic. However, for classes that meet regularly, you may also
use this as an opportunity to include target language from the previous lesson.
Read the questions aloud and check comprehension. Students then find a partner
to discuss these questions for the length of the warm up. As no pair of
students should finish talking early, this means that everyone will need to ask
follow-up questions to generate a conversation.
Idea #2: Here the teacher writes two or three controversial
statements on the board. Students work in pairs/groups and agree or disagree
with the statement, as well as provide reasons. For example:
Question: Money is more important than happiness.
Question: Success can only be measured by income.
Question: Success can only be measured by income.
Although the examples are best suited for intermediate or advanced classes,
easier statements for beginners can also be generated. Students use the
statements as a springboard for additional conversation on the topic.
Idea#3: Students get into pairs/groups. The teacher writes a
topic on the board, and students brainstorm associated vocabulary for the
topic. Each pair/group should write the words in a notebook. This activity
requires students to use vocabulary on the lesson topic, allowing the teacher
to gloss over any already known words and focus on unknown material. In
addition, if the teacher opts for students to write the words on the board,
then the words can be used later in the lesson.
Idea #4: In this activity, students brainstorm words based on
the topic. However, some filters are used to order the generated vocabulary.
For example, a topic on occupations might have students generate three jobs for
the following categories:
Category: What jobs earn more than $1,000,000?
Category: What jobs are dangerous?
Category: What jobs do high school students usually do?
Category: What jobs are dangerous?
Category: What jobs do high school students usually do?
As in the previous activity, the vocabulary can be shared with the class
for use elsewhere in the lesson.
Idea #5: Students speculate from a question, and can be used
with just about any grammar point. This works especially well when the question
requires students to speculate about the teacher (or other teachers). For
example, if the grammar point for the lesson were on the past tense, students
could discuss and write ideas to answer the following question:
Question: What did your teacher do this weekend?
Students can generate realistic ideas for the answer, or even completely
off-the-wall ones.
Idea #6: For this activity, students get into small groups to
play charades. The teacher writes actions on slips of paper before the start of
the class, with each student receiving one slip of paper. The students must act
out the action on the paper without speaking, and their group must guess the
answer. The teacher can focus on just vocabulary, so students will answer:
"play soccer" or "eat" or "watch TV." The teacher
can also plug the verb into a sentence, such as "You (verb) last weekend,
didn't you?"
Idea #7: The teacher selects several pictures before the class
starts, preferably ones with a lot of action and/or with something unusual
happening. In addition, the teacher should consider the topic of the lesson, as
the students can generate ideas/vocabulary for use elsewhere in the lesson.
Students get into pairs/groups. The teacher distributes one picture to each
pair/group, or posts the pictures on the board. Students then describe the
picture, answering wh-questions as prompts. For example:
Question: Who is in the picture?
Question: Where are they?
Question: What are the people doing?
Question: Where are they?
Question: What are the people doing?
Several pictures allow students to have several discussions. If one picture
has been distributed to each group, pictures can rotate after three minutes.
Idea #8: In this warm up activity, the teacher again selects
several pictures before the class starts. Students also get into pairs/groups
to talk about the pictures, which will maximize student talk time during the
initial stages of the lesson. However, students now speculate a conversation
for the people in the picture. Students don't need to write a dialogue, but
they should imagine what is being said. After a few minutes, students move on
to another picture and repeat the activity.
Idea #9: The teacher writes five questions on the board, all of
which are yes/no questions. Students find a partner and ask/answer one
question. They want to find someone who will answer "yes" to the question.
A "yes" means they can check off that answer, and then ask another
question from the board. A "no" means they must find a new partner
and ask the same question again. This activity gets quite chaotic and
competitive as students race to find answers to the questions.
Idea
#10: The teacher
writes two questions on the board. Students stand up and find a partner to
ask/answer each question. After both questions have been covered by both
students, each finds a new partner. They then repeat the process. Because
students talk to several people several times on the same topics, their answers
will show improved accuracy and fluency.
1. Routines. (6
Tania goes to
ballet class every day.
Ihor doesn’t eat
anything for one day every month.
2. Family Tree.
3. Whose is it? (6 – 7
The pen is Olena’s. This is Olena’s pen.
Is this pen yours, Olena? — No,
it isn’t mine. It’s Halyna’s.
4. My best days of
this month / week. Вживання the Past Indefinite Тense.)
І remember / like . Do you remember this
day? Yes, it was the day I . No, not really.
5. Find
someone who . Вживання the Present Perfect Тense, прислівників ever, never у питальній, стверджувальній і заперечній формах.)
Find someone who
+ Present Perfect.
Find someone who
has read “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” in
English.
Name: Oleh.
Oleh has read “The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer”.
Або:
Name: Nobody.
Nobody has ever read “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”.
6. Things have
changed since then. Вживання the Present Perfect Тense).
What has changed in
your family since last year? (Your city; your street; your school; means of
transport; fashion; etc.)
7. Brainstorming
comparisons. (7
Вживання ступенів порівняння прикметників, as . as; not so .as; than.)
— A TV set, a lamp,
a chair
— A mountain, a
river, a lake
— A car, a bus, a
bicycle.
8. Preferences.
і т.п.
— Dog, cat, canary
— Morning,
afternoon, evening
— Summer, spring,
winter
— Village, city,
town
— TV, radio, video.
Which do you prefer and why?
prefer morning to afternoon because it is not so hot.
9. Detectives. (7
Is this yours?
isn’t mine. It’s his (hers, theirs).
10. The old days. Вживання used to.)
11. I have lived
here for .(10 – 11 клас. Вживання the Present Perfect Тense або the Present Perfect Continuous із since, for.)
Present Indefinite: I go to school №6. I live in Kalush. I read an interesting
book. I go in for sport.
Since when have you
been going to school № 6? I have been going to school №6 since 1994.
EACH OF US CAN SAVE AND PROTECT EARTH —
OUR HOME
We are inhabitants
of Earth. Our planet is our home. But it is in danger because much of it
is dirty or dying.
What is the reason
for this situation on our planet?
What environmental
problems does our planet face? Please, write down one problem on a
sheet of paper,
stick it to the globe and explain why it is so important to your mind.
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
POLLUTION OF AIR ACID RAINS ENERGY POLLUTION OF WATER POLLUTION OF LAND
RAINFORESTS CHEMICALS IN FOOD WILDLIFE RUBBISH
III. As you can see
our planet does face very serious problems. The situation is so serious that
some scientists say either we stop killing our planet or we’ll kill ourselves.
Pollution causes other ecological problems, doesn’t it? But is it possible to
stop the pollution of air, water, and land at all?
т.п.
You are right
saying that it’s impossible to stop the pollution of Earth. What can mankind do
to protect Earth, our home? Is there any way out of this situation?
While working with
these posters you should find answers to the following questions:
WHO can control
pollution?
WHAT must they do for
this?
Look at your
posters very attentively and say WHO IS MISSING.
Pupils:
INDIVIDUALS.
V. And now we’ll
see whether you do something in your everyday life to control pollution. You’ll
work in small groups.
On the whole some
of you know how to act in these everyday situations. But as we see
(have a look at our
globe) our planet faces some other problems and as you have already
stressed they must
be solved too.
Please, read the
subject of our class again: EACH OF US CAN SAVE AND PROTECT
OUR EARTH - OUR HOME
Think it over and
express your opinion taking a certain position and giving arguments to
explain your
choice.
STRONGLY DISAGREE
DISAGREE NEUTRAL AGREE STRONGLY AGREE.
NEUTRAL - STRONGLY DISAGREE - DISAGREE - AGREE
-STRONGLY AGREE
STRONGLY DISAGREE -
NEUTAL /
DISAGREE, NEUTRAL - AGREE .
VII. And now it’s
time for you to complete the poster by making up a list of things
individuals can do
to control pollution.
· to reuse products
· to take part in
the recycling programs
· to drive less, to
use bikes and mass transportation
· to save
electricity to save water and heat
· to save paper and
wood
· to buy food that
needs less packing
· not to litter our
streets, parks, rivers and forests
· to eat less meat
to stop killing of the animals
· not to use
aerosols (hair and body spray)
· to plant trees,
flowers
· not to cut off
trees, bushes
· to enlarge our
knowledge about our nature and the ways of reducing damage to the planet.
VIII.
I hope now you
understand that each of us can do at least one thing in our everyday life and
even it can change the world we live in. I believe you’ll do your best to save
our planet for ourselves and for future generations.

Cinderella
I
Story-teller: This is the story
of Cinderella. She is the beautiful girl. She hasn’t got a mother. Her father
has got a second wife now, and she is Cinderella’s stepmother. She is a
horrible woman. She has got two daughters, Pat and Liz. They are Cinderella’s
stepsisters.
Cinderella: Good morning,
Daddy, dear!
Father: Good morning, my
child. How are you today?
Cinderella: Fine, Daddy. And
you?
Father: Oh, I’m OK, but,
my child…
Cinderella: Yes, Daddy?
(Enter Lady Sybil)
Stepmother: Cinderella. What
are you doing? You’re not working!
Father: But…
Stepmother: Work, girl, work.
Make the breakfast. I’m hungry. I want my toast, jam, cheese and a cup of tea.
Cinderella: Yes, stepmother.
Stepmother: And you, Basil,
what are you doing? Helping the girl?
Father: Er, no…
Stepmother: My daughters are
coming down and they want their breakfast, too.
Cinderella: Yes, stepmother,
everything is ready.
II
Story-teller: Today there is a
ball in the King’s palace. Invitation cards are sent to many important people
of the kingdom. What about Lady Sybil? Will she also get an invitation card?
(Enter Pat and Liz)
Cinderella: Good morning,
sisters.
Pat and Liz: Good morning,
Mummy dear.
(Enter Postman)
Postman: Lord Basil. Lady
Sybil. You are invited to the ball to the King’s palace. Here is your
invitation card.
Pat and Liz: Oh, Mummy dear.
How lucky we are!
Stepmother: Yes, we are. But
we haven’t got new clothes. We need some beautiful clothes for the ball. I want
a party dress.
Pat: And me, too. I
want a beautiful white evening dress. And I want a blue hat and white shoes.
Liz: And me, too. I
want a beautiful blue evening dress, blue shoes and a white hat.
Cinderella: And me, too. I
can’t wear these old clothes. I want some new clothes.
Stepmother, Pat and Liz: You?...
Cinderella: Yes, me.
Stepmother: You can’t go to
the ball.
Pat: No, you can’t go
to the ball.
Liz: No, you can’t go
to the ball.
Postman: Oh yes, she can.
Look here. The invitation card says: “To Lord Basil and Lady Sybil and their
three daughters.” So she can go to the ball.
Stepmother: Oh no, she can’t.
Postman: Oh yes, she can.
Pat and Liz: Oh no, she can’t.
Stepmother: Oh yes, she can.
Pat and Liz: What?
Stepmother: Yes, she can go
to the ball. Of course, she can. Thank you, Postman. Goodbye. Cinderella, you
can go to the ball. But first there’s some work for you to do. Make beds, go to
the shop and buy food and drink, make tea, wash my clothes…
Liz: Wash my clothes.
Pat: And my clothes.
Liz: Wash my dress!
Pat: And my dress!
Liz: My stockings!
Pat: My socks!
Stepmother: And only then you
can make your dress for the ball. And then you can go to the ball.
Cinderella: Oh no, I can’t do
all that today! How can I go to the ball now?
III
Story-teller: So Lady Sybil
with her two daughters has gone to the ball. Cinderella hasn’t got new clothes.
She can’t go to the King’s palace. It’s 9 o’clock. The ball is starting. Who
can help her?
Cinderella: I’m so unhappy. I
can’t go to the ball. Who can help me?
Fairy: I can help you,
Cinderella.
Cinderella: But who are you?
Fairy: I’m your Fairy
Godmother. I can do things for you. Now tell me what’s your problem?
Cinderella: My dear Fairy
Godmother, I can’t go to the ball, but I want to go there so much!
Fairy: And where are
your sisters? At the ball? M-m-m-m. Well, let me see. Aha! That’s a good idea!
Cinderella, give me a box, that shoe – box over there.
Cinderella: Here you are.
Fairy: Now you stand
there near the box. One, two, three! Look out of the window, Cinderella! Here’s
your carriage! One horse and one driver. Now you can go to the ball.
Cinderella: My clothes. I
can’t wear these at the ball.
Fairy: M-m-m-m, no, you
can’t. Close your eyes, Cinderella. One, two, three! Now open your eyes.
Cinderella: What a beautiful
dress!
Fairy: And so you are,
Cinderella. Now you can go to the ball and have a good time.
Cinderella: Thank you, thank
you, Fairy Godmother.
Fairy: But, Cinderella,
there is just one thing.
Cinderella: Yes?
Fairy: You can have
these things only until 12 o’clock. Come home before that time. Do you
understand?
Cinderella: Oh yes, yes.
Thank you, thank you. Thank you very much, Fairy Godmother!
Fairy: Bye, Cinderella.
Have a good time and remember – you must be back home before 12 o’clock.
IV
Story-teller: We invite you to
the King’s palace. The ball is going on here. All the guests enjoy themselves
dancing, talking to each other and listening to music. All young girls try to
attract Prince’s attention. But it seems to me he doesn’t like anybody. Let’s
see what will happen next.
(Enter Cinderella.)
Prince: Who are you, my
beautiful girl? What’s your name? Where do you live?
Cinderella: I live in the
country with my father, stepmother and two stepsisters.
King: Oh dear. You are
so pretty. Are you a princess, my dear beautiful girl?
Prince: No, your majesty,
she lives in the country with her father and stepmother. But she is so nice, isn’t she?
Cinderella: Oh, I’m sorry. I
can’t speak with you, I must go.
Prince: Oh no, stop,
please, wait.
Prince: She is so pretty.
I want to marry her. But I even don’t know her name. What shall I do?
King: Don’t worry, we’ll
find her. We have her shoe. You’ll marry that girl, whom this shoe suits.
Story-teller: The Prince went
around the half of the kingdom and tried to find his sweetheart. At last he
arrived at Cinderella’s house.
Postman: The Prince wants
you to try this shoe on.
Liz: I want, I want to
try it on.
Pat: Oh, I also want
to try it on.
Postman: It doesn’t suit
you. And you? Will you try it on, please?
Prince: Oh, my
sweetheart! I love you!
King: Be happy, my
children.

Family is a fundamental unit of the society. Family
traditions help us define who we are, they provide something steady, reliable
and safe in a confusing world. The strength of a family is in its loyality to
each other. Only love makes a family. The family is the country of the heart.
So many countries, so many customs.
When in Rome, do as Romans do.

Where is the strength of the family?
The bundle of sticks
Once an old man, who thought he would not live long, called his sons. “ Bring
me a bundle of sticks,” he said. The young man did so. The father tied the
sticks together and gave the bundle to his youngest son. “ Can you break this
bundle of sticks?’ he asked. The boy tried to do so. “ No, Father. I can’t”, he
said. “ Then give the bundle to your brothers. Perhaps one of them can do it”.
The brothers all tried, but with the same result. Then the old man untied the
bundle and gave one stick to each son and said; “ Can you break one stick?” “
Of course”, said the young men and each broke his stick.
“ You see,” said the father, “
if you live in friendship, you will be stronger. Union is strength”.

No Place
like home
Today Vicky Samson came home
from school at four o’clock. She watched TV for half an hour. Then she did her
homework. She’s working hard at the moment, because she’s got exams soon. After
dinner, while she was helping with the washing up, she talked to her parents
about a problem she has been having at school.
It was a normal day, but
it was the kind of day that makes Vicky (and her parents) very happy. ”I can’t
believe it”, says Vichy. ” Life is wonderful. Four months ago I was living in a
cardboard box under a railway bridge in London”.
Last October
Vicky ran away from home. How did it all start?” I hated school. We always had
so much work to do and I didn’t see the point of it all. But it was worse at
home. My parents didn’t understand me. It was all “Do this!” “Don’t do that!”
We only spoke to each other when we were arguing. One day I just couldn’t stand
it any more”.
On that
October day, Vicky didn’t go to school. She went to the station, put on
some clothes she had, packed them in her school bag, threw her uniform
away and caught the train to London.
“At first it was really
exciting. There were all the bright lights, theatres and shops and some really
interesting people. It was just like on the telly. I had to sleep on the
streets, but I didn’t mind. I was free – no school, no homework, no parents.”
But soon there was no food and
no money either. “Someone nicked my purse about a week after I arrived. I
couldn’t get a proper job, because I was only 15 and you have to be 16. I
worked in a restaurant for a while, washing up. That was really funny, because
I’d always complained about doing the washing up at home. I didn’t get much
money, but at least it was warm”.
Then the restaurant closed
down and Vicky was back on the streets again. She was cold, hungry and miserable,
but she survived until one night about a week before Christmas. “I was walking
down a street, when I looked into someone’s front window. There was a girl
there, just like me. She was decorating a Christmas tree. I thought “If I was
at home, I’d be decorating our tree now”. Then I couldn’t help it. I just
started crying. I sat down on the pavement and cried and cried”.
Luckily for Vicky, the man who
lived at the house, Mr Robinson, came home while she was sitting there. He took
Vicky into the house and Mrs Robinson gave her a cup of tea and something
to eat. “They were so kind. I told them my whole story. They offered to pay for
my ticket home, but I didn’t want that. I thought my parents would be angry”.
But the next day she was back
home. While Vicky was at their house, Mr Robinson went next door and telephoned
the police in Birmingham. Three hours later, Vicky’s father arrived to collect
her.
“It was the best Christmas
present I’d ever had”, said Mrs Samson. “We’re so grateful to the
Robinsons for what they did”.
